In our first post, we introduced you to the heart of Indicare—the idea that every child’s journey is a unique one, and that they deserve not just to be heard, but to be truly understood. Now, let’s take a step deeper into the world of care, where we put young voices at the very centre of everything we do.
We’ve spoken about the “why” behind our mission, but let’s explore the “how”—how we bring understanding, empathy, and support into the everyday workings of care. How we make sure that every young person, no matter where they come from, feels seen, heard, and valued.
Regulation 44 Visits: More Than a Check-Up
One of the cornerstones of our work at Indicare is the independent Regulation 44 visits. These visits go beyond the usual checks on safety and compliance. They’re about making sure that children feel comfortable, safe, and respected in the spaces they call home. We’ve always believed that listening is just as important as observing, so during every visit, we make time to sit with the children, to hear their thoughts, and to create a space where they can share openly, without fear of judgment.
It’s during these visits that we learn the most—whether it’s a young person’s quiet reflection on their day or their courage to speak up about something troubling them. It’s these moments that allow us to step in, to act with kindness, and to make sure that the care they receive is truly supportive. After all, when you’re a child, home should feel like a place where you can be yourself, and our job is to ensure that every child can be exactly that.
Rebuilding Trust After Missing Episodes
Another area where we see the power of listening in action is through our return interviews with young people who’ve been missing. These moments are never about placing blame, but about understanding. Why did they leave? What are they feeling? How can we help them feel safe again?
It’s an honour to sit down with these young people when they return, to give them the space to share their side of the story, and to gently help them rebuild that sense of trust and belonging. Our goal isn’t just to track whereabouts—it’s to track how they’re feeling, to listen to what’s behind the actions, and to walk beside them as they navigate their emotions and needs. Every conversation, no matter how small it may seem, is a vital part of restoring trust.
Finding Their Feet
There’s no easy way to say it—leaving one home for another can feel like a monumental change. It can stir up all kinds of emotions: fear, uncertainty, and even a sense of loss. That’s why, at Indicare, we work tirelessly to support young people during these transitions.
We don’t just help with the practicalities—though that’s certainly important. We also ensure they feel supported emotionally, with the reassurance that they are not alone in this new chapter. We believe that every transition, whether big or small, should be handled with care and compassion. We take time to listen, to check in, and to provide the stability that so many young people are searching for during these uncertain times.
The Real Lives That Matter
Behind every visit, every interview, every action we take, there are real lives, real stories. Stories that matter. Stories of resilience, of courage, of young people facing unimaginable challenges—and emerging stronger for it or sometimes often to scared to speak out about the system that took away their life.
We don’t just see children in care as numbers or cases. We see individuals with hopes, dreams, fears, and desires, all of which deserve to be understood. It’s why we’re committed to sharing some of these stories, when they’re ready and with their permission. Stories that show the strength it takes to overcome hardship, to face the unknown, and to rise above it all.
Because every story deserves to be heard.
Looking On As The Journey Continues
As we look to the future, we know there’s still so much more to be done. We know that there will always be challenges, always be moments of uncertainty, but we also know that every child in care deserves more than a system that simply ‘looks after’ them. They deserve people who listen, who care, and who are dedicated to helping them grow, thrive, and eventually leave the care system better equipped to face the world.
